A splash of colour

A splash of colour

What looks like two flower heads floating in a stream actually features no water at all. The green is actually the leaves of the plant and the camera movement creates the watery effect. I love when a photograph can transform something in an almost magically way.

Road abstract

Road abstract

Yet another car motion photo. This one is more minimal, yet somehow creates a dreamy, even slightly nostalgic feel for me.

Fast & Slow

Fast & Slow

Ernst Haas has really inspired my slow shutter-speed photos of cars and roads. In this one I like not only the obvious strong graphic nature of the road-markings, but also how the dark car balances the dark footpath.

Road abstract

Road abstract

Another of my images exploring the motion of cars in my local area. This one is more abstract that even I usually go for, but I like the balance of the image.

Sunday shining

Sunday shining

An abstract image of a car speeding past a tranquil willow tree on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The colours of the light passing through the tree and the car itself add an extra dimension.

Going bump in the light

Going bump in the light

A car hitting a speed bump… the clash between the speed of the vehicle and the attempt to enforce the speed limit. I find that tension interests me… and this photo, while being a total abstraction, somehow conveys that tension to me.

Not still life

Not still life

A long exposure of wild flowers on a bright windy day. The result is like an impressionist painting. I love the vibrancy this photo expresses. So full of life.

Support

Support

We don’t think of plants as sentient, but this young flower has literally gone out of its way to support its friend… This photo reminds me that there is good in the world and the importance of compassion, friendship and love.

Stalking

Stalking

Peering through the stalks of the reeds, resulting in a framing that draws me back to being there every time I view it.

Crossing

Crossing

A photo from my zebra crossing series. The shadow from the hazard lamp fell perfectly across the car as it flashed past, allowing us to see the pedestrian walking on the other side of the car.

Gathering

Gathering

Another storm cloud gathering overhead… seems symbolic of the times at the moment.

Absorbing

Absorbing

A photo trying to capture how reading can change who we are. In this case I am reading a book on the works of Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Near miss

Near miss

It always shocks me how drivers think nothing of speeding past pedestrians on zebra crossings. This photo started a new project for me of long exposures of traffic.

March

March

The trees were in suspense

Listening with an intense

Anxiety for the Word

That in the beginning stirred

The dark-branched tree

Of Humanity.

~ by Patrick Kavanagh

The Woods or the Trees

The Woods or the Trees

This shot just soothes my soul.

Bark

Bark

I love the contrast between the bright bark of these three tree trunks against the dark foliage.

Brewing up a storm

Brewing up a storm

Storm clouds gathering over a coffee shop that is itself being constructed.

Refraction

Refraction

I love how the cut glass refracts the light and adds even more complexity to this shot without losing the main structure of the framing.

The trap is set

The trap is set

Sunrise on a foggy morning suddenly illuminated a whole array of spiders webs, which seemed bejeweled by tiny droplets of water left on them by the fog.

Dad

Dad

My Dad removing his shoes before going inside from the garden and the shoes sitting beside the hoe in the yard after he has.

Curiosity

Curiosity

This raven peering under a bench always grabs my attention. I never did look to see what he saw, I like the mystery.

Rebellion

Rebellion

There is something about the battle between humans and nature in this photo that resonates with me. The tree pushing aside the yellow lines as if to remind us that humans cannot control mother nature. The discarded can and graffiti echoing that disdain for the attempted order.

Cloudy day

Cloudy day

The middle photo is not what I was hoping for… the cute dog walking along the path, framed by the bench. He instead walked directly up to me to say hello and that was so much nicer.

Shooting the breeze

Shooting the breeze

One of the final days of social distancing. Two people sitting apart, but somehow intimately close. The smoke visualises the danger of the time being other peoples breath.

Eyes to the right

Eyes to the right

A candid moment on a walk with my father and brother.

Resurrection

Resurrection

Three backlit trees on a small hill on a bright summers day… The contoured light on the clouds contrast beautifully against the flat silhouette of the trees and hill. The finished image, shot close to Easter 2022 reminds me of the contrast of Easter between sorrow and joy.
