About Stephen Murphy B. Eng

I am a Photographyer and Mechanical Engineer with over 20 years experience developing innovative products. Currently Head of Design at SEFtec Group, I also develop my own inventions. Some of my experience is outlined below:

Photography

I fell in love with photography as a child with a small 110 film point and shoot camera. Stepping up to a second-hand 35mm camera in my teens and eventually going digital. It was always something I enjoyed, but never took seriously until December 2021. Since then I have been experimenting and practicing much more regularly and moving slowly towards calling myself a photographer rather than someone who took pictures occasionally. SEFtec is a world-leading manufacturer of robust, reliable & cost-effective safety training simulators for the world's leading survival training centres. They manufacture a wide range of training simulators, including Helicopter Underwater Escape Trainers (HUET) and fire-fighter training props.

Stainless Steel Chess Set

I have always loved chess sets and in 2019 decided to challenge myself to design one using the materials that I work with every day. It is made from polished, laser-cut stainless steel and bolted together. The pieces are made from stainless steel nuts and bolts. The only part that isn’t stainless steel is the stone tile used on the board.

boilingpoint™

BoilingPoint™ is a redesign of the electric kettle that is faster, quieter and more efficient than any kettle on the market. Electric kettles are very efficient at heating water, but are over-filled by an average of 30%. Even the most efficient kettle will therefore use an average of 30% more energy than necessary. BoilingPoint™ solves this by boiling water in the cup, ensuring only the water needed is used.

wheelcrown™

When a wheel detaches from a heavy truck or bus the result can be fatal. The main cause for wheel detachments is stud failure as a result of incorrect stud tension; whether too high or too low. Wheelcrown™ prevents this by ensuring the correct tension has been set, while also providing a faster and simpler way of tightening the wheel nuts.

XO-Series HUET

The XO-Series HUET platform allows everything from a large helicopter or airplane to a RIB or pilot boat to be replicated. The driven roll enables the most realistic ditching and capsize training.
